Air brake faults stop a fleet faster than engine faults
On SINOTRUK HOWO and SHACMAN trucks, the air brake and air supply system is the second most frequent cause of unplanned stops after tyre problems. In fleets of HOWO NX, HOWO A7, SHACMAN F3000 and X3000 tractors and tippers, most brake complaints trace back to a small number of consumable parts: air dryers, valves, chambers and the compressor.
Components of the air brake circuit
- Air compressor and its unloader valve, driven from the engine.

- Verify the port thread and valve body marking before ordering a replacement valve.
- Brake chambers are marked by type and stroke: spring brake chambers must match the mounting and stroke exactly.
- For SHACMAN F3000 and X3000 with Weichai WP10 and WP12 engines, note the compressor flange pattern.
- Dryer cartridges are consumable and should be part of a scheduled maintenance plan, not a breakdown repair.
Maintenance practice that pays back
- Drain the air tanks daily in humid climates and after water crossings.
- Replace the dryer cartridge at the interval in the truck manual, or earlier if oil carry-over is present.
- Perform a leak test at 600 kPa: a pressure drop above the manufacturer limit means the circuit must be repaired.
- Check the compressor discharge for oil mist, which indicates worn piston rings and contaminates the whole circuit.
- Keep the four-circuit protection valve functional: it is a safety item, not a convenience.
