They are both pleated, both rectangular on many models, and both get handed to a customer at the counter with the phrase "you need both." But the engine air filter protects the engine, and the cabin filter protects the people. Confusing them leads to two different failures: a dusted engine on one side, and a fogged windscreen with a musty smell on the other.
The engine air filter sits on the intake path, upstream of the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body. Its job is to stop abrasive particles before they reach the cylinder walls.
Service intervals depend on dust load far more than on distance. A car doing 20,000 km on sealed roads and a pickup doing 8,000 km on gravel are not the same case.
The cabin filter sits in the HVAC intake, usually behind the glovebox or under the wiper cowl. It cleans the air that goes into the passenger compartment.
If the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox, check whether the housing door has a foam seal. A missing seal lets unfiltered air bypass the element entirely, which is a common and invisible fault.
The reliable test is location and frame shape: engine filters are usually deeper, with a moulded urethane perimeter; cabin filters are thin and often carry a plastic edge strip and a directional arrow.
**Can I run without a cabin filter?** Mechanically yes, practically no. You get dust on the evaporator core, and a dirty evaporator is a smell you cannot remove without disassembly.
**Does a dirty air filter void a warranty?** Not automatically, but documented neglect during a dust-related engine failure claim is a real risk.
**How often should the cabin filter be changed?** Annually is a safe default for most passenger cars, and every 10,000 to 15,000 km in heavy pollution.
**Will a performance filter add power?** On a standard engine the restriction from a clean OEM-style filter is rarely the limiting factor. Claims of noticeable gains are usually unsupported without a dyno sheet.
The engine air filter protects metal, is judged by light transmission, and is replaced on dust load. The cabin filter protects lungs, is judged by airflow and smell, and is replaced on season and hygiene. Same shape, different job, different interval. Keep them separate in your service records so the next technician does not guess.
