Cummins engines require phosphate-free, silicate-free heavy-duty coolant meeting Cummins CES 14603. Use a 50/50 mix of fully formulated OAT (Organic Acid Technology) concentrate and deionized water. Supplement Coolant Additive (SCA) levels must be checked at 30,000 km intervals for engines using conventional coolants. Long-life coolants (OAT) can extend flush intervals to 400,000 km / 6,000 hours.
For SCR-equipped engines (ISX15, X15, ISL9): use only ISO 22241-compliant DEF (AUS 32). Store between -5°C and 25°C. Replace DEF filter at 480,000 km / 6,750 hours.
Intervals below represent severe service — typical for mixer trucks, construction equipment, and short-haul operations. Highway linehaul intervals can be extended per OEM guidance.

When a Cummins engine powers a concrete mixer truck, the duty cycle is severe by definition:
Technically yes, but with limitations. CES 20086 adds Cummins-specific soot handling and oxidation tests that generic CK-4 does not guarantee. Using non-CES oil may void warranty on X15 engines and will shorten DPF life. For mixed fleets, standardize on CES 20086 — it is backward compatible with ISX15 and ISL engines that originally called for CES 20081.
Not necessarily. SPN 3361 indicates soot load % (typically trigger at 100%). Run a stationary regen via INSITE first. If regeneration fails to reduce soot below 20%, the DPF may be ash-plugged and require professional cleaning. Ash service is typically needed every 400,000-600,000 km for highway duty and every 250,000-350,000 km for mixer/severe service. Only replace the DPF can if ultrasonic cleaning fails.
Every 30,000 km or 500 hours for severe service — which covers all mixer trucks. The CCV filter clogs faster with high idle time. A clogged CCV raises crankcase pressure, blows oil past the rear main seal, and can cause turbo oil leaks. On ISX/X15 engines, part number 3974183. A clog-indicator kit (3974182) can be added to condition-based replacement.
Cummins specifies a minimum cetane number of 40 for XPI fuel systems. For cold-weather starting in Central Asia / Mongolia (below -20°C), use winter-grade fuel with cetane 45+ and anti-gel additive. Low-cetane fuel causes hard starts, white smoke, and increased injector deposits.
