Excavator Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Kits: Identification and Sourcing Guide
Hydraulic cylinder failure is one of the most common causes of downtime on excavators, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders and cranes. When a boom, arm or bucket cylinder starts weeping oil or loses holding power, the repair itself is usually straightforward - the hard part is identifying the correct seal kit.
This guide explains how cylinders are sealed, how to measure them, and what to send a supplier to get the right kit the first time.
Why cylinder seals fail
Seals degrade from heat, contamination and pressure cycling. The usual failure sequence is:
- Wiper seal fails first, allowing dust into the gland
- Rod seal begins to weep, oil film on the rod
- Piston seal bypasses internally - the cylinder drifts or loses power
- Buffer and wear rings wear, eventually damaging the chrome on the rod
Once the chrome is scratched, no seal kit will hold. Replace the rod or have it re-chromed as well as fitting new seals.
The parts inside a seal kit
A complete kit normally contains:
- **Wiper / dust seal** - cleans the rod as it retracts
- **Rod seal (gland seal)** - the primary pressure seal at the rod
- **Buffer seal** - absorbs pressure spikes behind the rod seal
- **Piston seal** - separates the two chambers inside the barrel
- **Wear rings / guide rings** - centre the piston and prevent metal contact
- **O-rings and back-up rings** - static sealing of gland and piston
- Optional: rod nut seal, pin bushings, gland bearing
Cheap kits often omit the buffer seal and the back-up rings. Those omissions cause repeat failures, so confirm the kit contents before ordering.
Materials and operating conditions
Seal material selection matters as much as the dimensions:
- **NBR (nitrile)** - general purpose, the most common
- **PU (polyurethane)** - high abrasion resistance, good for rod seals on earthmoving equipment
- **PTFE (Teflon) with bronze filler** - low friction, used for piston seals and wear rings on high-pressure cylinders
- **FKM (Viton)** - high temperature and chemical resistance, used in hot or aggressive environments
- **Bronze-filled PTFE wear rings** - standard on most premium kits
For excavators working in high ambient heat or with hydraulic oil running above 90 degrees Celsius, FKM or high-temperature PU is usually the better choice.
How to measure a cylinder correctly
You cannot identify a cylinder seal kit from the machine model alone. You must measure. Take the cylinder apart and record:
- **Rod diameter** (the moving chrome shaft)
- **Bore diameter** (the inside of the barrel)
- **Gland / head outer diameter and thread**
- **Groove dimensions** for each seal position
- The **OEM part number** stamped on the cylinder or on the old seals
Photograph the gland and piston with a rule laid across them. Suppliers can cross-reference from an accurate measurement set far more reliably than from a machine model year.
Common cylinder applications
- Boom lift cylinder
- Arm (stick) cylinder
- Bucket cylinder
- Boom offset cylinder (compact machines)
- Blade and outrigger cylinders
- Quick-coupler cylinders
- Wheel loader lift, tilt and steering cylinders
Brands in wide service include Komatsu, Caterpillar, Hitachi, Kobelco, Volvo, Doosan, Hyundai, SANY, XCMG, LiuGong and SDLG.
What to send your supplier
- Machine make, model and serial number
- Cylinder position and OEM part number
- Rod diameter, bore diameter and gland dimensions
- Photographs of the gland and piston with a rule
- Confirmation of whether you need seals only or a full kit with wear rings
Storage and fitting tips that extend life
- Store seal kits in their original packaging, away from light and heat
- Fit with the correct installation tool - never stretch a seal over a sharp edge
- Lubricate seals with the system hydraulic oil, not grease
- Check the rod for straightness and chrome damage before reassembly
- Flush the cylinder and replace the oil if there is evidence of contamination
Order strategy
Operators who keep one spare seal kit for each cylinder size on the fleet avoid the worst downtime. Kits are light and small, so they travel cheaply by air and cost nothing to store - and they turn a two-week wait into a same-day repair.
