Breaker parts fail in a predictable order
Hydraulic breakers on excavators from 13 to 50 tonnes, including carriers such as CAT 320, CAT 330, CAT 345GC, Volvo EC210 and EC480D, SANY SY215 and XCMG XE370, are consumable machines. The chisel wears first, then the front bushing, then the piston and the seal kit. Understanding that sequence lets a fleet plan downtime instead of reacting to it.
The wear parts and what they do
- Chisel (moil point, flat, blunt or wedge): transfers energy into the rock. Tip wear beyond the tool manufacturer limit means lost energy and heat in the piston.
- Front bushing and wear ring: guide the chisel. A worn bushing lets the chisel tilt and damages the piston face.
- Piston and cylinder: the striking core. Scoring or cracks mean replacement, not polishing.
- Seal kit and accumulator diaphragm: keep nitrogen charge and oil separation. A flat accumulator shows up as weak blows and overheating.
- Through bolts, tie rods and side plates: fatigue cracking is a common cause of sudden failure.
- Retainer pin and chisel stop: cheap parts that cause expensive damage when missing.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recommended action |
| Weak or slow blows | Low nitrogen charge or worn accumulator | Recharge to spec or replace diaphragm |
| Chisel heat discolouration | Worn front bushing or misalignment | Replace bushing and wear ring |
| Oil overheating | Internal leakage or worn piston | Inspect piston and cylinder bore |
| Metal particles in oil | Piston or cylinder damage | Full lower body overhaul |
| Chisel breakage at shank | Wrong tool for application | Move to a blunter or larger chisel type |
Matching parts to the breaker size
- Light class (80 to 100 mm chisel): mini and midi excavators, trenching and concrete.
- Medium class (120 to 140 mm chisel): 20 to 30 tonne carriers, general demolition.
- Heavy class (150 to 180 mm chisel): 30 to 50 tonne carriers, quarry and primary breaking.
- Always confirm the breaker brand and model, the chisel diameter and the shank length before ordering.
- Nitrogen charge pressure must follow the breaker manufacturer chart: overcharging damages the diaphragm as fast as undercharging.
Service practice that extends life
- Grease the chisel every 2 hours of continuous work using the specified high-temperature grease.
- Stop breaking immediately when the chisel starts to bend or when blow frequency drops.
- Never use the breaker as a lever or a pile driver: this is the leading cause of side plate and tie rod failure.
- Check accumulator charge monthly on heavy-class units.
- Keep a spare chisel and front bushing per machine so a worn tool never stops the job.
Supply tiers and warranty
- Genuine: original manufacturer parts, full traceability, highest cost.
- OEM: produced by the original supplier without the brand mark, same geometry and material.
- Premium: aftermarket chisel and bushing in alloy or tool steel with controlled heat treatment, 6 to 12 months warranty.
- Standard: cost-effective option for light duty work, 3 to 6 months warranty.
Warranty covers manufacturing defects, not normal wear, chisel misuse or incorrect nitrogen charge.
