Chinese heavy trucks: why parts sourcing is different

HOWO, Shacman, FAW and Dongfeng now dominate working fleets across the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and Latin America. The economics are hard to argue with. But the parts market around these trucks is fragmented: the same part number can be found at three very different quality levels and price points.

Getting this right is the difference between a fleet that runs and a yard full of parked trucks.

The three quality tiers — and what they actually mean

**Genuine (OEM)** — made by or for the original manufacturer (Weichai, Fast Gear, Sinotruk). Highest price, usually 40–80% above premium aftermarket.

**Premium aftermarket** — produced by factories working to OEM specification, often tier-1 suppliers. Same geometry, comparable service life, 30–50% lower price. This is where most professional fleets buy.

**Standard aftermarket** — budget segment. Acceptable for high-mileage units where the truck's remaining life is limited, but expect 20–35% shorter service life.

The mistake buyers make is assuming "aftermarket" means "one quality level". It doesn't.

Critical components to get right

Weichai engines (WD615, WP10, WP12, WP13)

The engine is the single biggest cost centre. Common demands: piston kits, liners, bearings, cylinder heads, injection pumps, injectors, turbochargers.

Fast Gear transmissions (9JS135, 12JS200)

Synchros, gears, bearings, shafts and repair kits. **Verify the gearbox code first** — 9JS135TA, 9JS150 and 12JS180TA share a family name but differ internally.

Axles and final drives

HOWO HC16/AC16 and Shacman MAN-series axles need periodic crown wheel and pinion work, plus side gears and half shafts. Complete repair kits generally beat buying parts individually.

Five rules for buying well

  1. **Always work from the OEM part number.** Chinese catalogues are organised by number, not by brand name.
  2. **Ask who actually manufactures the part** — not just what it's "compatible with".
  3. **Request photos and a test report.** A serious supplier provides both as standard.
  4. **Compare warranty length.** 12 months versus 3 months tells you what the supplier really believes about their product.
  5. **Confirm country of origin** — it affects import duty and, often, quality.

Lead times and logistics

From Jinan, Shandong — China's heavy truck parts hub:

MOQ should be 1 piece or 1 kit with a direct supplier. High minimums usually mean you're talking to a reseller.

Frequently asked questions

**Are Weichai parts compatible with Shacman trucks?**

Many Shacman models use Weichai engines, so a large share of parts interchange. Always confirm by OEM number before ordering.

**How do I spot a counterfeit part?**

Check the marking (crisp, cast or engraved), the packaging, and the paperwork. If anything feels off, ask for a batch test report — counterfeiters rarely have one.

**What warranty is normal?**

12 months against manufacturing defects on mechanical parts, written into the invoice or PI.

**Can I get a repair kit instead of individual parts?**

Yes, and it's usually cheaper and simpler — one kit covers the whole assembly.

**Do suppliers provide technical support?**

A good one provides cross-references, technical sheets and installation guidance. That's part of the service, not an add-on.
